If you are experiencing graphical or slow down issues with playing Nexon Games one aspect to troubleshoot is your video game and resolution settings.
If you are experiencing issues such as:
- Bad Framerate
- Stuttering
- Lag
- Disconnections
The first thing you'll want to do is update your drivers and assess the cause of the issue.
Updating your Drivers:
To achieve better performance it is necessary to have your graphic drivers up to date.
First, you need to find what type of graphics card you have:
- Click the ‘Start’ button/Run
- Type "DxDiag" (without the quotations) and hit enter
- Click the Display tab
- Your graphics card make is shown next to "Manufacturer" in the red box within the image below
- The model is next to "Chip Type" also within the red box.
Note: You will need full admin access on the computer in order to update your drivers.
- Visit the website of your graphics card manufacturer.
- Search for your graphics card model & name.
- Download graphics drivers.
- Run the downloaded installer package.
- Restart your computer.
Microsoft DirectX is included as an integral part of Windows operating systems. You can update DirectX by applying the latest service pack or other updates through Windows Update.
We recommend not using beta or test drivers as they may not be compatible with your Nexon Game or have other issues as they are in the test phase.
Assessing your connection:
One possible issue is network related. Unfortunately, most network issues are intermittent.
In order to assess a problem as it happens, you can use a free program like PingPlotter. By running it alongside the game and pinging one of our servers like maplestory.nexon.net you can assess if there is an issue on your end when connecting to our servers WHEN the issue occurs.
Because our servers don't allow pings, you won't see the final hop, but you will be able to see if there are issues on your network prior to that or not, which either identifies the issue or that there is not an issue there. The two things to look at are "Packet Loss" (PL%) and "Ping" packet loss can cause stuttering/lag and other issues. Higher ping is worse, the higher it is, the more lag you'll feel.
By exporting a sample set right after experiencing an in-game issue, and sending the file to our support team, we can help you assess latency/connection issues.
Assessing your hardware performance:
Another potential issue is hardware struggling to run the game.
Open Hardware Monitor is a free program that can monitor your hardware. While we won't be able to assess a report in the way we can with PingPlotter as we're looking for a specific timeframe when the issue occurs, you should be able to see your computer workload and temperatures.
When running this alongside the game, there are several things you'll want to look at.
1. Assessing CPU (Central Processing Unit)
Your CPU Load and CPU temperatures. Are any cores/total CPU maxing out when you're lagging? If so, your CPU may be struggling to run the game.
Are your temperatures getting unusually high? This can cause a crash/full shutdown. You can check your CPU at the top and Google what the normal temperatures for your CPU are, as they do vary.
2. Assessing RAM (Memory)
Are you running at 100% or close consistently when lagging/crashing? This can indicate that your computer is low on memory when playing. Doing a Clean Boot to test with fewer programs running may help alleviate it. If so, you can be more conservative about what you run when playing the game to help resolve or alleviate your issue.
3. Assessing GPU (Graphics Processing Unit/Video Card)
Is your Video Card maxing out? Are your temperatures going above manufacturer recommendations?
4. Assessing FPS (Frame Rate per Second)
Any number of programs out there monitor frame rate; Nvidia control panel has it's own you can turn on in GeForce Experience, and AMD has a monitor within the Radeon Overlay. Running this alongside the others can usually give a very clear picture of any performance or network issues on your end.
Final thoughts
While assessing these usually helps locate and assess many issues, occasionally the game server itself is experiencing lag for some reason or another. However, running through the above and sending us the results, as well as a DxDiag, can help us assist you, and assess the issue, or may even inform you on the issue without having to contact us.
